I think the issue is that the Minute Man on the radio is affected by the robot attacking, the mines exploding below him, or the robot detonating when it's destroyed. I had a similar problem, I had initially got the radio transmitter to work when I first arrived at the Castle, but when I went through the Old Guns quest to set up the artillery, the transmitter bugs out and doesn't work.
